Anton Schwarzkopf

Manufacturer profile

Anton Schwarzkopf, a major name in modern roller coaster history

Anton Schwarzkopf is one of the names most closely associated with the rise of modern steel roller coasters. A German engineer and ride builder, he influenced both amusement parks and travelling funfairs with compact, forceful and highly distinctive attractions.

The Schwarzkopf story began in a world closely connected to travelling showmen. The family business originally worked on trailers and equipment for circuses and fairground operators. That background shaped the company’s design philosophy: many rides had to be robust, transportable, quick to assemble and able to deliver a strong experience within a limited footprint.

From the late 1950s and especially through the 1960s and 1970s, Anton Schwarzkopf became one of Europe’s most important steel coaster builders. His name is linked with models such as Wildcat, Jet Star, Looping Star and Shuttle Loop, as well as several custom layouts. Schwarzkopf coasters are often remembered for their flowing pace, tight curves, energetic transitions and an impressive sensation of speed.

His work became even more influential through his long collaboration with Werner Stengel, the German engineer who became one of the world’s leading roller coaster designers. Together, they helped shape the modern looping coaster by making inversions more practical, better calculated and more comfortable than the early circular-loop experiments of previous eras.

Well-known examples include Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain, widely recognized as the first modern tubular-steel vertical looping roller coaster, and Olympia Looping, the spectacular travelling coaster with five vertical loops. These rides show why Schwarzkopf occupies such a special place in amusement history: he connected fairground mobility, industrial engineering and the visual drama of modern theme park rides.
