From family beginnings to a compact and highly immersive park.

Phantasialand: a story of transformation since 1967

A history built on reinvention and new ideas

Phantasialand opened on 30 April 1967 in Brühl, on the initiative of Gottlieb Löffelhardt and Richard Schmidt. Over the decades, the park moved from a fairly classic family offer to a much denser destination shaped by strong themed worlds and increasing attention to scenery.

The park’s story has never been static. The expansion of Alt Berlin, the arrival of Mexico, China Town and later Mystery, the 2001 fire and the major rebuilding phases that followed all show a site in constant evolution. This ability to reinvent itself largely explains Phantasialand’s current identity.

A few visual milestones in Phantasialand’s evolution: Black Mamba, Chiapas, Taron and F.L.Y.

Today, Phantasialand stands out for the way it works within a limited footprint: attractions, hotels and themed areas are interwoven with striking intensity. That density, combined with projects such as Deep in Africa, Klugheim and Rookburgh, is what gave the park its modern reputation.
