About this park

Six Flags AstroWorld, Houston’s lost major theme park

Six Flags AstroWorld was one of Texas’s most memorable amusement parks. Located in Houston just south of the Astrodome and I-610, it opened on June 1, 1968 as AstroWorld and was operated by Six Flags from 1975. The park closed permanently on October 30, 2005 after thirty-seven seasons, before the site was dismantled, cleared and sold.

For guests, AstroWorld combined roller coasters, family rides, live entertainment, themed lands, internal transportation, major water rides and WaterWorld, the adjacent water park later included with the destination. The park remains strongly remembered because it connected Houston, the Astrodome, space-age branding, large coaster structures and a local culture of family and teen visits.

What guests came for

AstroWorld was not just a coaster collection. Guests could move from European scenery to western streets, Mexican and Asian-inspired areas, Looney Tunes children’s rides, the 610 Limited train, height rides with views of Houston, and cooling breaks at WaterWorld. Names such as Texas Cyclone, Greezed Lightnin’, XLR-8, Ultra Twister, Batman The Escape, Thunder River and Dungeon Drop show how varied the park became.

Why the park matters today

Because the site no longer exists, accurate documentation is important: former coordinates, lands, demolished or relocated rides, WaterWorld, show venues, shops, restaurants and the wider Astrodomain connection. This entry preserves AstroWorld as a complete historical destination rather than a simple list of lost rides.
