Baron 1898
Description
A mine where gold awakens the spirits
Baron 1898 draws its visitors into the workings of Gustave Hooghmoed, an industrialist convinced that the gold buried beneath Brabant belongs to him. Brick buildings, abandoned tools, distant voices and the songs of the Witte Wieven give substance to a mine where human ambition has disturbed ancient forces.
The gloom of the workshops leads to the top of the shaft. A suspended silence comes before the plunge, then air, speed and sudden returns towards the earth create the feeling of having crossed a forbidden boundary. The mine remains present throughout the escape, as though every glimpse of its buildings recalled the baron’s offence.
A great adventure carried by its legend
Baron 1898 never separates the thrill from its story. The music, industrial architecture, Hooghmoed’s portrait and the spirits’ warnings all recount the same obstinacy. This unity turns a spectacular experience into an immediately recognisable tale of a curse, deeply rooted in the landscape of Ruigrijk.
