The cursed house of Hugo van den Loonsche Duynen

Villa Volta tells of the punishment of Hugo, leader of the Bokkenrijders, condemned never to find rest in his own home. The first rooms establish his confession among dark timber, portraits and voices. As his crime becomes clear, the house ceases to be mere scenery and becomes the very instrument of the curse.

In the great room, the horizon slips away and familiar points of reference exchange places. Ceiling, walls and floor seem to carry visitors into the house’s vengeance while the music heightens the vertigo. The illusion remains inseparable from the story: it is Hugo’s home that stubbornly refuses to find peace.

A Brabant legend that became a classic

Villa Volta gave monumental scale to the cursed-house theme by rooting it in the folklore of the Bokkenrijders. Architecture, confession and disorientation form one uninterrupted tale. This coherence influenced many later creations while retaining an identity deeply tied to Brabant and Efteling’s narrative art.
