Kletterberg Zugspitz: the mountain that made way for pirates

From the 2004 expansion to Wasserspielwelt Pirateninsel

Opened during the major 2004 expansion, Kletterberg Zugspitz shaped the park landscape until 2016. Its removal made room for Pirateninsel, the large water-play area introduced in 2017.

A large structure born from the park expansion

In 2004, Bayern-Park grew from roughly 25 to 40 hectares. The new part of the grounds brought animal enclosures, landscaped paths and several family experiences. Kletterberg Zugspitz became one of its most visible landmarks: a large artificial mountain that children could climb through different routes. The attraction did not depend on a vehicle or a fixed ride cycle. Each visitor chose a pace, looked for the next hold, changed direction and gradually reached the higher sections. For twelve seasons, the rocky structure gave the area an immediately recognisable profile. The main photograph, taken in April 2011, shows the attraction in operation and preserves a clear record of its appearance before the site was transformed.

In 2017, the site becomes a water-play island

The 2016 season was the last for Kletterberg Zugspitz. Blütenrondell and Kleinkinderdorf disappeared at the same time as Bayern-Park completely reorganised this part of the grounds. Wasserspielwelt Pirateninsel opened on the site in 2017. The change was substantial, although the main audience remained similar. Where children once climbed a dry mountain, they now find two wooden pirate ships, ladders, slides and seventeen interactive water features. Fountains, water curtains, spraying flowers and cannons turn the space into a bathing area. The succession shows how the park renewed a family zone without removing its essential purpose: giving children room to move freely, invent their own games and spend a long time in one part of the park.
