Wellenflieger and Königsflug: a family flight reinvented

Wellenflieger accompanies the creation of the upper area

Wellenflieger opened in 1997 as Bayern-Park developed its upper area with new family rides. Its suspended seats moved progressively away from the central axis as the carousel accelerated, giving riders an open-air feeling of flight above gardens and paths. The motion was easy to understand from outside and soon became a familiar silhouette across the grounds. For sixteen seasons, the ride shared the landscape with Hubseilturm and several attractions inspired by Bavarian imagery. Its closure after the 2013 season did not mean that the experience was abandoned. Instead, the park chose to preserve the idea of flying chairs while completely renewing the machinery and visual identity.

Königsflug keeps the motion and increases its scale

Königsflug opened on the same site in 2014. The new Zierer wave swinger carries up to forty passengers, rises to around six metres and sends its seats out across an eight-metre flight radius. Eight double seats also allow an adult and a young child to share the journey under the park’s conditions. The visual identity is more deliberate: romantic paintings, Bavarian colours and references to royalty turn the carousel into a courtly attraction. The replacement illustrates a recurring form of development at Bayern-Park. A familiar experience is not simply removed, but reinterpreted with greater capacity, height and scenery. Visitors who knew the old Wellenflieger can still recognise the basic movement, while the surrounding landscape has become more spectacular.
