Hong Kong Disneyland opened on Lantau Island on September 12, 2005, following a project announced in 1999 by the Hong Kong Government and The Walt Disney Company. Their joint venture, Hongkong International Theme Parks Limited, operates the resort. Construction began in 2003 on reclaimed land at Penny’s Bay; the dedicated MTR line arrived with it, tying the destination to the city’s transport network from the outset.
Four lands surrounded Sleeping Beauty Castle on opening day: Main Street, U.S.A., Adventureland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. The kingdom was more intimate than its older Disney counterparts, yet Lantau gave it a setting found nowhere else. Mountains remained visible behind the castle and tropical planting enclosed Adventureland, where Jungle River Cruise and Festival of The Lion King soon became local signatures.
A three-stage expansion reshaped the original plan between 2011 and 2013. Toy Story Land opened on November 18, 2011 with its oversized playthings; Grizzly Gulch followed on July 14, 2012 around a fictional mining town and Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars. Mystic Point completed the sequence on May 17, 2013. Its manor, collection and mischievous monkey Albert form a story written for Hong Kong, without ghosts or a direct copy of Haunted Mansion.
That period gave the park experiences with a voice of their own. Mystic Manor sets Danny Elfmanʼs music against a collection awakening room by room; Big Grizzly Mountain turns a mining town and its inquisitive bears into western comedy. Rather than disguising the compact scale, these creations answer it with concentrated detail and stories that continue into Explorerʼs Club Restaurant and the abandoned workings around Grizzly Gulch.
Tomorrowland gradually turned towards Stark Expo: Iron Man Experience opened in 2017 and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! replaced Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters in 2019. At the park’s centre, Sleeping Beauty Castle closed in 2018 and emerged as Castle of Magical Dreams in 2020. Its new outline does not reproduce an American castle; towers, domes and ornaments honour several Disney heroines while keeping the Lantau mountains as its backdrop.
World of Frozen opened on November 20, 2023 as the eighth land and the largest expansion since 2005. Arendelle unfolds between village, fjord and North Mountain, with Frozen Ever After, Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs and Playhouse in the Woods. The park is continuing this pursuit of a distinct identity: Disney has confirmed a future Super Hero expansion and new Pixar entertainment, but has not yet supplied a timetable precise enough to describe either as an operating attraction.
