A leisure centre grown from Texas Putt-Putt

Alley Cats Hurst brings together two faces of North Texas family entertainment on one site: a broad indoor centre and outdoor grounds punctuated by games and rides. The NE Loop 820 address is more than a bowling alley. It joins the legacy of Putt-Putt miniature golf with an arcade, batting cages, a go-kart track and a compact collection of amusement rides.

That identity reaches back to the Smith family, active in family entertainment since 1964. Ken Smith opened a Dallas Putt-Putt in 1969, before Brian Smith and his father acquired the former Malibu Grand Prix property in Hurst in 1993. Go-karts, batting cages, arcade games and small rides then joined miniature golf and gave the venue its hybrid form.

Two levels of bowling and an indoor world

Inside, twenty-eight bowling lanes are arranged across two floors. Sixteen occupy the ground level; another twelve form the Upper Alley, with sofas, a fireplace and its own bar. Cosmic-bowling light and large screens give the whole space a more theatrical character than a traditional bowling hall.

The arcade mixes skill games, ticket machines, digital experiences and virtual reality. Nearby, the laser-tag arena rises through two storeys in a steampunk setting of gears, glowing ramps and darkened passages. The restaurant and bars connect these spaces without flattening their individual atmosphere.

An open-air leisure landscape

Outside, the eighteen-hole miniature-golf course preserves the Putt-Putt lineage while petrol-powered go-karts circle a tyre-lined track. Tea Cups, Himalaya and Drop N Twist make a small playland, overlooked by Rattler: since November 2017, the turtle-shaped cars of this SBF Visa Group spinning coaster have formed the site’s most distinctive silhouette.

A ten-million-dollar transformation completed across late 2017 and early 2018 gave the centre its present scale. The expansion notably installed the twenty-eight lanes on two levels and its large two-storey laser arena. Alley Cats Hurst therefore tells a continuing story: a local Putt-Putt becoming a complex where bowling, video games and funfair rides remain recognisable parts of one landscape.
