About this park

Disney’s European storybook kingdom

Disneyland Park opened on 12 April 1992 as Euro Disneyland. The first Disney kingdom built in Europe did not simply reproduce the Californian park: its designers reconsidered the continent’s history, landscapes and tales to create a place belonging to Marne-la-Vallée. Five lands radiate around Sleeping Beauty Castle, whose outline was devised to remain fantastic in a country where genuine castles already inhabit the landscape.

That European attention appears immediately on Main Street, U.S.A. Its façades depict an American town moving from the nineteenth into the twentieth century, but Liberty Arcade recalls the bonds between France and the United States, while Discovery Arcade presents inventors’ visions. The covered passages also answer the climate of the Paris region. At the avenue’s end, the castle combines stained glass, clipped trees, a story gallery and a living dragon beneath the rock: a complete Parisian interpretation rather than a simple central marker.

Five worlds joined by one geography

Frontierland treats Thunder Mesa as a single mining town. Big Thunder Mountain, Phantom Manor, the fort, landing and businesses share a story of prosperity followed by a curse. Adventureland then leaves the American West for an oriental bazaar, pirate coast, jungle and forgotten temples gathered around Adventure Isle. Changes in vegetation, stone and music lead from one narrative to the next without breaking the park’s coherence.

Fantasyland draws on the European origins of many tales adapted by Disney. French, British, Italian, Dutch and Bavarian architecture surrounds the castle, the journeys of Peter Pan, Pinocchio and Snow White, and the miniatures of Storybook Land. Discoveryland instead embraces futures imagined by Jules Verne, H. G. Wells and Leonardo da Vinci. Airships, copper, orbits and machines form retrospective science fiction that can also receive Star Wars and other spacefaring heroes.

A living heritage since 1992

The park has changed its name, renewed its entertainment and transformed several attractions without losing the architecture that made it a distinctive European creation. Space Mountain has carried several stories, Star Tours was completely renewed, Phantom Manor deepened the legend of Thunder Mesa, and new scenes inspired by Marc Davis joined the western riverbanks. Parades, castle productions and character appearances add transient life to that enduring fabric. Disneyland Park consequently remains both a record of the ambition of 1992 and a place that continues to write its own history.
