Bobbejaan Schoepen

Biography

From a young musician in Boom to a Belgian popular icon

Born Modest Hyppoliet Joanna Schoepen in Boom in 1925, Bobbejaan Schoepen became known as a singer, guitarist, actor, comic entertainer and virtuoso whistler. Coming from a working-class background, he gradually built a distinctive stage personality shaped by country music, popular song, humour and a strong sense of self-mockery.

From the late 1940s, he was among the first Belgian performers to establish a genuinely international career. His tours took him through the Netherlands, France, Germany and Austria. A broad repertoire and a natural command of live entertainment helped him reach audiences far beyond the Flemish music scene.

An artistic career transformed into a permanent venue

After many years of touring, Bobbejaan Schoepen wanted a place where he could welcome audiences on a lasting basis. In 1959 he acquired a large estate in Lichtaart and built a theatre and beach. The site officially opened in 1961 under the name Bobbejaanland, chosen with his professional circle.

During busy periods, Bobbejaan performed several shows a day alongside Belgian, Dutch and German artists. Together with his wife Josee, he gradually expanded the estate: the variety venue gained rides and eventually developed into a full amusement park. From the 1970s onwards, running the park occupied an increasingly important place in his life and in that of the family.

Selling the park and returning to music

After facing serious health problems, he and his family sold Bobbejaanland in 2004 following more than four decades of operation. The transition gave him room to return more fully to music. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, entered the Whistlers Hall of Fame in 2008 and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the Crown in 2009.

An artistic and family legacy that remains alive

Bobbejaan Schoepen died in Turnhout on 17 May 2010, one day after his eighty-fifth birthday. His family continues to preserve his archives, costumes, recordings and objects connected with Bobbejaanland. His life remains unusual: a popular artist who transformed his stage world into one of Belgium’s best-known leisure parks.
